Description

Punk began as a revolt against the mainstream rock music of the 1970's, which was dominated by big "theatrical" bands and a lighter sound that mixed bubblegum-pop and country influences into rock. By contrast, punk music was stripped-down, load, fast and "in-your-face." While punk bands like the Sex Pistols became "mainstream" in the U.K. (much to the dismay of some in British "mainstream" society), the American punk-rock scene stayed largely underground. A newer generation of "post-punk" musicians carry on the tradition on both sides of the Altantic.
