Trance is the "minimalism" of techno music, featuring simpler rhythms and endlessly repeated synthesizer patterns, with only occasional and gradual changes. The presumed effect of such repetition is to put listeners into a "trance." Trance music gained popularity in dance clubs in the late 1990's, particularly in Europe.
