Named for "discotheques," clubs that play dance music, disco music has one and only one purpose: to make people dance. It emerged as a genre from New York dance clubs that tended to play soul and funk music with heavy, pulsing beats and evolved into a form that emphasized the beat above all else. Disco music and dancing became a craze in the U.S. in the late 1970's, but by the beginning of the 1980's disco had largely played itself out and was fast becoming a joke. However, the old 70's hits enjoyed a revival in the late 1990's among some rebellious teens and nostalgic 40-year-olds. More contemporary techno dance music owes much of its beat-emphasis to disco, and some of the original grooves have found a new home inside hip-hop and rap tracks.
