Many of the techno and electronica styles of the 1990's differentiated themselves by pushing beat-oriented dance music in new and interesting directions. What separates "Big Beat" is that it does not. It apsires to be as unpretentious as possible, and while this contributed to a surge in popularity in the mid 1990's, it also brought accusations of "dumbing down" from critics and techno fans.
