Description

The early 20th century is really a transitional period between romanticism and modernism. Rather than the outright rejection of the past that was taken place in the visual arts, and would take place in music in the latter half of the century, composers continued the trends from the romantic period. The loosening of harmonic and melodic rules in the 19th century paved the way for the early atonal compositions and eventually serialism. Programmatic music found a new home in the medium of film (consider the similarities between 19th century opera and the sound tracks from the Star Wars movies).
