The baroque periods spans most of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from the end of the Renaissance to the beginning of the Enlightenment. The term "baroque" is actually quite negative, and perhaps more aptly describes the gaudy visual art of this period than its music. Although baroque music does indeed display much ornamentation and complex counterpoint, it also acheives a certain simplicity and elegance. This seeming contradiction of baroque music is best realized in the contrapuntal music of Johann Sebastian Bach, greatest composer of this period.
