THE OTHER
L'Autre, begun on a walk along the DART tracks in Dallas, has gone
through many transmutations. Two versions follow, warts and all.
A-1 THE Dream of Reason--Revolt
Sitting fearfully in the circle, gazing at a triangle till it glowed,
I raised and pulled the card over my entire body. I felt the nostalgic
shock of recognition. Standing among a great chorus was Alpha, my
first destroyer of illusions. I thought of her father off to bomb the
dirty Russians in the missile crisis of 1962, her middle-class family
huddled in the cold posh lust of auto-destruction. From the vortex
came their plethora of words.
Having banished the serpent from the garden, how can you expect a
mere hand to whip heat into this clammy business?
Wanting everything, people forked their tongues,
giving them something to call, mine,
consciousness, the fire robbed from the gods
no wonder eagles peck at our livers.
We go to war with a picture.
The head of Earth
stuffed in Saturn's mouth.
The digging stick,
a writing instrument,
lined the fields.
The woman by the moon's
a ball of blood
opening like a flower
before the thirsty lord of birds:
into your mouth I place it.
With this rite the alphabet is cut
exposing the head of
the brave swift impetuous male.
He put gold in the fire
and this Bull came out.
Then he poured melt in the river
and bade us drink.
Come the important day,
extort more from her pouches than virtue;
if she does not bring gold enough,
pour gasoline and set her ablaze.
Raising the skulls head

Inside her
a ladder reaches down
lifting me to the new world.
Under the heads of swallows
the necks of swans
on the backs of geese
under the tongues of reindeer--
only in the giant's belly
does he find the runes
to tack the prow and stern.

With the True God came the beginning of trampling on the people,
the beginning of forced debt, enforced with life,

driving his spirit away like an insect.
Now there is enough.

One in Dallas warns
the Earth will seek retribution.
Alpha stood before me like a judgmental father.
I remembered the camp out and her wild
fire dance wearing a mask of bones. How in the
claustrophobic night, she knifed a slit up
the wall of the tent and pushed her way through.
Thieves come by night to rob Her. Look at the inner parts

A-2 Patriarchal Barrier
A few minutes later the very young Beta arrived.
I took advantage of my authority as her
teacher. Thinking on her drunken and abusing father
and castrating mother, I unselfishly
advised her to go find herself before coming back.
My heart is glad
I have caught a little bird;
my heart is caught
in the net with the little bird.
I watched her, fearless
strike the flesh
tethered to the line.
She wanted to know
just where the holes in her values were--
me thinking what comes

Beta and I went off to visit an archeological site
to celebrate her return. Wandering
Horseshoe Canyon, Utah, shrouded with Indian
figures rising from cliff faces we seemed
archetypal travelers. You were so fecund horseflies
could not leave your blood alone. We
ran for a mile up the canyon, biting flies s
treaking your chalky legs red. Humiliation rose to
the surface, but I could not keep them from you
no matter how I swatted or cried for your
predicament.
Was that why, later at my door, when you denied
knowing me much less wanting to write
my name in your belly or feed our child
with the milk of your blood, you looked so bloodless?

Omega smiled and offered to return my animal. The wolf
worm barred its teeth and
lunged at me before transforming itself into a coyote.
Then moving off it turned to speak:
"at one so bent on knowing, the Woman laughs to think

Her wings unveil their circle of pearls,
pull us in to the fragrant river

The thing She bears is memory.

What do you like? I like to lie out
in an open area and let the sun burn me. That's
what I like. Sometimes, especially if I have
not done it recently, the sun will blister me.
Other times, it will make me darker than I
really am. Afterwards, my skin is tight all over
and it squeezes my body like somebody
does when you're afraid of the dark and then
you're not alone anymore. But that doctor
doesn't know me at all. If he were inside me l

B-6 Re-integration of the Principles
It was dark and my father was dying. Under the quiet
ticking of the evening clocks,
After trying to brush his teeth, the wife of 43 years
suggested a glass. He said, I can't
remember how to look in the mirror. Don't be ashamed
she said come with me. Now look,
this is you reflection. This, now touch, is your face.
Put on the toothpaste; that's right.
The old man smiled broadly, knowingly, and scratched

PRELUDE
2-3 minutes
Summary:
Ancient Paradiso--Matriarchy. Fire dispensed
holistically the Uroborus.
Sibilant (sounds), balanced cycles of breath
reflecting a general ecotropic health. Erotic
expression leads to seduction and theft. This
section contains many voices. Mezzo is
integrated into the whole. Instruments use breath.
Organic sounds generally. Abundance
and diversity. As the cycles of breath move toward
orgasm, the masculine redirects their
energy into the current expression of exploitive power.
Thus the intended climax, which
would be the mysterious conjunction, is thwarted
for egotistical purposes in an act
equivalent to the proverbial theft of fire.

PATRIARCHAL USURPATION OF THE FEMININE
at least 4 minutes
Summary:
Patriarchal and modern. Energy and culture broken into discrete parts and exploited for
personal power. Fire institutionalized and mechanized. Order Obedience Punctuality are
required to feed the machine. No voice and no logos are present. Music grows in complexity
and self-replicates. Overpopulated--too little space for the operations required (ie to keep
the machine going). The Organic/Orgasmic breath of the prelude has become the piston of
this epoch. With saturation what appears to be fast actually slows. Maximum production
freezes the system into non-production. The artificial vibrating pulse, a mechanical echo of
the original organic pulse, increases its frequency and metamorphoses. The first theft of fire
constructed a barrier between consciousness (masculine) and the unconsciousness
(feminine). Consciousness then usurped the elements of the unconscious and reshaped
them into the engines of egoistic power. Thus, the feminine was imprisoned and enslaved
through a process that partitioned, debased, and objectified (utilized as needed) her. As
the system's appetite increases, it shakes and metamorphoses into an unsustainable omega
state--maximum production, zero yield. The reincarnated feminine emerges from that
which had previously imprisoned her and attacks the barrier in fury (whose origins lie at
the moment of the original theft of fire). [As she goes through the remains] [or as the
catastrophe collapses about her], the sounds of the machine are morphed into the ghosts of
her grief.

GRIEF AND RECOLLECTION
4-6 minutes--2 minutes as song
With her [passage through] [or experience of] the wreckage of the patriarchal machine and
the ghosts of grief she acquires gnosis and begins the reformation of her self and the
reassertion of the feminine principle. This is the place of her song. The vortex framed by
the ghosts of her grief slowly becomes breath (re-animating the energy from the prelude).
With this breath she breathes into the memory of her anger at her offspring and lover, the
usurping masculine (in its guise as consciousness). She also breathes into the memory of her
grief. In both cases vestiges of the original are present. With this medicine does she gain
the gnosis she needs to begin again, her paux [sp] de deux with consciousness. Gradually
her breath becomes also a peristaltic motion. She is re-rooting her energy with a renewed
sense of self. In short, the unconscious has achieved--through her trials--the gnosis (or
touch of consciousness) she needs to begin the second seduction of full consciousness. The
peristalsis is feminine in nature, but at the place of the near meeting of the opposing waves
the ghost of the masculine rides. Gradually she begins her song celebrating her-self and
calling for the masculine--her conscious partner, her lover--the one she needs.

Summary:
Now the masculine consciousness strikes the place at the near meeting of the waves. The
feminine is displaced in the wake. What is happening is that consciousness--still untutored
by its experience--seeks to re-dominate the feminine. But SHE has changed. With each
passing strike, the feminine displacement in the wake grows in strength. At some point her
weight causes the masculine to lose balance and the wave becomes the unsteady vortex of a
wobbling gyroscope. The feminine will not be dominated as before. She insists that
consciousness pass through the necessary experience that will lend it some measure of
unconsciousness--thus the unsteady wobble of the Earth will find its balance, held in the
lover's embrace. That resolution is for some other moment. Here the partners oscillate--
[wildly?].
