The greatest generation gap in music may not be between teenage rock fans and their parents, but among the composers in the Bach family. While the elder Bach perfected baroque counterpoint, his sons rejected complex counterpoint in favor of a new style, with more lyrical melodies and simpler accompaniments. While the Bach sons are considered among the innovators of Classical style, later composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven are considered its masters. Many of the forms most associated with classical music, such as the symphony and sonata, gained in popularity during this period, first as popular music before gaining more "seriousness" in the Romantic period.
